How to insert a GIF into your email signature?
To kick things off, you’ll need a GIF. We’ve already covered the process of making one in this guide. But we’ll list some of the options here as a quick reminder.
- Professional software: Adobe Photoshop and Adobe After Effects have a wide selection of professional tools for GIF-making. But you’ll probably need some help from a professional designer.
- GIF software: GIF Brewery 3, Wondershare, and ScreenToGif are much simpler options for PC and Mac.
- Online apps: Ezgif, Makeagif, and Imgflip are excellent web-based resources for those of us who are a bit short on time. Though, the quality of GIFs generated online isn’t that spectacular.
Tip: We recommend hosting the GIFs separately. You can use them as a linked image to avoid several challenges associated with SPAM filters or email size, such as:
- The increase in bandwidth to send and receive the email (this is especially true for senders who rely heavily on email marketing or recipients who are limited in mobile traffic or don’t have regular access to WiFi or fiber)
- Certain SPAM filters can’t understand or process the contents of an image. There’s a chance they will not trust an image-heavy email. This chance is slim as developers have trained their algorithms to process harmless images accordingly, but why gamble when there’s a simple workaround at your disposal?
How to add an animated signature in Gmail?
Step 1: Log into your Gmail account.
Step 2: Hover the cursor to the top right corner of the screen and click the gear icon.
Step 3: Scroll down to the signature section in the settings menu. If finding the right option takes too long, press ctrl+f and type in the word ‘signature’ in the search bar.
Step 4: Place your cursor where you want the GIF to appear and click the ‘add image’ button.
Step 5: Upload the GIF using Google’s interface. Drag and drop your file into the window, or click the ‘Select a file from your device’ button and browse for the GIF on your local drive.
How to add an animated signature for Outlook
Step 1: Launch Outlook.

Most major email clients like Gmail, Outlook, or Apple Mail support GIFs out of the box. However, you can still face some challenges with older versions of these clients (Outlook started GIF support after the 2007 version) and with several niche options.
What happens if a GIF is not supported?
Commonly, the client will only display the first frame of your animated Logo. Sometimes the email client will leave a blank space in the place where the image should be.

- Mind the size: Anything larger than 1 megabyte simply won’t cut it.
- Be subtle: Don’t overdo the effects. The fewer animations and special effects, the better. We suggest opening your GIF and looking at it for at least a minute. This is a tried and tested method of avoiding eye-sore visuals.
- Design around the first frame: We suggest starting with your logo (if applicable). If an email client can’t play your GIF, the user will still see your logo, and it wont seem misplaced.
