FAQ

Is Mailtrap email spam checker free?

Free email spam checker is included in our Email Testing free tier, which allows you to test up to 100 emails per month. If you need more, you can upgrade to a paid plan. Check our pricing page for more details.

How does Mailtrap spam checker work?

Our spam checker uses the Apache SpamAssassin email filter to determine the spam rating of your emails. It runs numerous tests on email headers and body text to detect red flags and assign a score to each.

How can I use Mailtrap’s email spam test tool?

To use Mailtrap’s free spam checker, all you have to do is sign up. A virtual inbox will be created by default, and you can start capturing emails right away.

Can I test email campaigns with Mailtrap spam checker?

Yes, you can test any emails with the spam checker, be it newsletters, email notifications, cold emails for outreach, or marketing campaigns. There’s no limitation on the types of emails you can test.

How can I check if my emails are landing in the spam folder?

Create an account on the Mailtrap platform and send the emails from the email service provider you’re using to the Mailtrap Email Testing virtual inbox.

Open the email and go to the Spam Analysis tab. There, you’ll see the Spam Report, which contains the general score and a detailed table with spam check points and their descriptions.

A score below 5 points is considered good. If your email gets more than 5 points, it will most likely be treated as spam by various email clients (Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, Outlook, etc.) and sent to the spam folder. In this case, check the rules that gained the highest score and fix your email template accordingly.

Can I run the email deliverability test with Mailtrap?

Yes, you can check certain aspects of email deliverability with Mailtrap.
Our spam checker isn’t a standalone tool – it’s part of our Email Testing product which has other useful deliverability tools.

So, you can use features such as a bounce emulator to test your SMTP client’s behavior, simulate real email delivery by sending emails to the inbox email address, validate HTML/CSS, compare HTML and text versions to ensure they match, detect and correct typos, test email app load, automate email testing using API, check if email elements (buttons, polls, etc.) function as expected, and so on. This way, you can identify potential deliverability issues and fix them before sending emails to recipients.

However, Mailtrap doesn’t offer inbox placement tests using seed lists.

Can Mailtrap help if my IP or domain has been blacklisted?

If your email spam check shows that your IP or domain name appears in any of the blacklists, the issue has to be resolved with the blacklists themselves.

For that, go to the Spam Analysis tab in Mailtrap and click the resource name that shows Listed status; it’s hyperlinked to the blacklist website. There, check the blacklists’ rules for delisting and follow their instructions.
Once your domain is delisted, make sure you follow anti-spam laws and email best practices to avoid getting blacklisted in the future.

Can Mailtrap email spam checker help me avoid high bounce rates?

Yes, it can. If your domain or IP has been blacklisted, your emails are likely to bounce, depending on the receiving mail server’s configuration. With the spam checker, you can view blacklist results before your emails hit the recipients’ servers.

Plus, all the emails you send to Mailtrap inbox are captured with the fake SMTP server, meaning that even if you send your test emails to invalid email addresses, it won’t cause actual bounces.
